What is the Process of Getting a California Driver’s License Under the Age of 18?

Updated: February 26, 2025

Step 1: Driver’s Ed Course

  • If you’re under 17 1/2 years old it is mandatory to comple a 30-hour California-approved Driver’s Education course. Must be ateast 15 years old to start this course.
  • The Driver’s Ed course can be taken online or in a classroom setting.
  • ProRoadmaster Driving School offers an online DMV certified Driver’s Ed course.
  • After passing the course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion (the “Pink Slip”).

Step 2: Written Test

  • Once you have completed the Driver’s Education course, it now time to head to your local California DMV office to take the written knowledge test.
  • The test consists of 48 questions.
  • Cannot miss more than 8 questions.
  • Once you pass the written test, you’ll receive your learner’s permit (provisional instruction permit).

Step 3: Provisional Instructor Permit

  • The provisional instructor permit is obtained the same day you pass the written test.
  • Bring all necessary documents and fees to the DMV office so you can get your permit with no issues.
  • Check the details on your permit before leaving.

Step 4: Driving Lessons and Practice

  • Once you have your provisional instructor permit, you are now ready to sign up for your behind-the-wheel driving lessons.
  • Sign up with a DMV certified driving school to take the mandatory six hours of professional driving lessons required by the state of California (usually in 2-hour blocks).
  • ProRoadmaster Driving School is a DMV certified driving school that offers driving lessons across the San Joaquin County.
  • Your instructor will sign your permit after your first lesson, allowing you to practice with a licensed adult (at least 25 years old) who has a valid driver’s license.
  • Additionally, complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
  • Once you complete your 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a DMV certified driving school, you will be issued a certificate of compleation by your driving school.

Step 5: Driving Test

  • Once you’ve met the criteria and held your permit for at least six months from the date you received your permit, you’re eligible for the behind-the-wheel driving test.
  • Schedule your test with your local DMV. Keep in mind that most DMV offices are booked out a few weeks ahead. Call atleast a month ahead of time to get your desired date and time.
  • Bring all necessary documents to the DMV office.

Step 6: Driver’s License

  • Pass the driving test, and the DMV will issue an interim California driver’s license (valid for 90 days).
  • Your provisional driver’s license will be mailed to you within those 90 days.
  • Adhere to restrictions during the first 12 months:
    • No driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
    • No passengers under 20 years old (unless accompanied by a licensed driver over 25).
    • Exceptions apply for emergencies and school/work-related needs.

Remember, obtaining a driver’s license is a huge life achievement, it is also a privilage, not a right. Congratulations and good luck on starting your journey to becoming a licensed California driver!
